CO2 Tank Refills vs. Exchanges: What You Need to Know

CO2 Refiller Map: https://powertank.com/pages/co2-map

One of the most common questions around Power Tank is whether a user should refill their CO2 tank or exchange it.

There is a lot of confusion around how industrial CO2 supply chains and CO2 refiller locations actually work.

This guide explains the difference between CO2 tank refills and exchanges, why exchanges are so common today, and how I recommend handling your Power Tank when working with gas suppliers and other retail business locations that refill tanks.

CO2 Tank Refill vs. CO2 Tank Exchange

CO2 Tank Refill

A refill means:

  • You drop off your exact tank
  • That same tank is filled and returned to you
  • Your branded or personally owned bottle stays with you

This is the preferred option when available. Something to note here is that some gas stores and welding shops do not offer refills. I recommend calling around first to find locations that refill CO2 tanks instead of just showing up at a gas supply or paintball gun store and hoping for the best.

Types of stores that you can search near you

  • Airgas Store (National industrial gas retail storefronts)
  • Linde Gas (Global industrial gas supplier)
  • Air Products (Industrial and food-grade gas facilities)
  • Local Welding Shops (Harris Industrial Gases or Barnes Welding Supply)
  • Industrial & Welding Suppliers
  • Sporting Goods & Paintball Stores
  • Paintball Fields & Pro Shops
  • Beverage, Homebrew & Safety Specialties
  • Homebrew Supply Stores
  • Fire Extinguisher Service Centers
  • Commercial Restaurant Stores

A quick Google search should bring you to a handful of these places. Call around until you find your new home for refilling your Power Tank.

I am located in Northern California off Highway 50. The shop I use is Advanced Gases & Equipment in Placerville, CA. It's a great location and easy to stop off at when I am on my way to Rubicon and many other trails in the Sierras.

CO2 Tank Exchange

An exchange means:

  • You give the supplier your empty bottle
  • You receive a different full bottle
  • The bottle will likely not be a Power Tank branded bottle
  • The bottle is still usable as long as it is a standard CO2 bottle
  • If you have to exchange a tank, just swap your regulator and handle to that bottle.

This is extremely common, especially in rural areas and at larger gas supply chains.

Why Exchanges Are So Common Today?

Many CO2 suppliers do not refill bottles on site due to staffing limitations, training requirements, or lack of refill equipment.

Most suppliers primarily serve restaurants, beverage companies, and welding customers. In those industries, bottle branding is not important, so exchange programs are the standard operating model.

In many cases, there is a central facility that performs refills. Local satellite stores collect empty tanks, ship them in bulk to the refill facility, and then receive bulk shipments of filled tanks back for exchange inventory. Some satellite locations may offer refills on personally owned bottles, but the chances of getting a branded Power Tank are low.

What I Recommend

We do not recommend handing over your branded Power Tank bottle if the supplier is not refilling it on site.

If you know a supplier only offers exchanges, we recommend keeping your Power Tank bottle and using a local exchange bottle or rental bottle instead. Your Power Tank regulator will work on any standard CO2 bottle that uses the CGA 320 valve.

If a supplier needs a few days to refill and you have confirmed they will return your exact bottle, that is typically fine, but the key is understanding what service they provide before leaving your bottle behind.

Sometimes these shops do not offer a refill on the spot; they send them out for refilling once a week or once a month. This is why it's important to call around before you decide on where and how to refill your CO2 tank.

Before exchanging a tank, renting a tank, or sending out your tank with a bunch of bottles, I would suggest finding a place that does refills on the spot.

Always Remove Your Regulator Before Dropping Off a Tank

I recommend removing the regulator and keeping it with you whenever you drop off a tank for refill or when working with an exchange supplier. This protects your regulator and prevents issues if a bottle is swapped.

Removal Is Simple and Fast

  • The handle is secured with two Allen head bolts
  • The regulator is secured with a single nut
  • The regulator nut size is 1 1/8 inch
  • You can remove it using our Power Wrench or a standard crescent wrench

The entire process typically takes less than five minutes.

CO2 Valve Compatibility

All CO2 bottles use the standard CGA 320 valve. This means Power Tank regulators will work on any standard CO2 bottle, whether it comes from us or from a local supplier exchange.

Power Tank regulator kits include:

  • Regulator
  • Handle
  • Hose

You can find all the regulator kits here: https://powertank.com/collections/regulators

Handle Requirements and Warranty Protection

Power Tank regulator must be used with the handle. Running a Power Tank regulator without the handle, regardless of what bottle it is used on, will void the warranty.

The handle is not just a carry feature. Its primary function is to protect the valve and regulator from impact damage.

Why Our Power Grip Guard Handle Is Different

  • Machined billet aluminum construction
  • Designed for impact protection and structural strength
  • Many copycat handles are cast aluminum and more susceptible to cracking

Bottle Neck Fitment

The Power Grip Guard Handle uses a dual radius clamp designed to fit:

  • Power Tank narrow neck bottles
  • Standard Luxfer CO2 bottles with a 2 3/8 inch neck

Catalina CO2 bottles use a different neck diameter of 2.6 inches. Power Tank no longer offers direct support for that neck size.

How to Find a CO2 Refiller

The best place to start is the CO2 refiller map:

If you are searching locally, try searching:

  • CO2 refiller + your zip code
  • CO2 gas supplier + your city
  • Welding gas CO2 + your zip code

Before visiting a supplier, call and ask whether they refill bottles on site or exchange bottles only.

Quick Summary

  • If the shop refills on site, you can typically leave your bottle for refill
  • If the shop only exchanges bottles, keep your Power Tank bottle and use exchange bottles if needed
  • Remove your regulator before dropping off any tank
  • Power Tank regulators fit standard CGA 320 CO2 bottles
  • Do not run the regulator without the handle

The goal is to make sure you get the performance, safety, and reliability your system was designed to deliver, no matter where you are refilling or exchanging your CO2.
